Reflection on my 82th birthday, or "I hate it. But.".
I hate it when I have to push on both armrests
Just to stand up and endure a sore leg.
I hate it when as soon as I stand I need to pee
And have to run to the toilet or piss in my pants.
I hate it when just walking to the corner store
Is worse than doing the Boston Marathon.
I hate it when my palate barely makes the difference
Between a 30 year old Armagnac XO and a 30-buck brandy.
I hate it when I can barely chew and swallow
The luscious rib steak I was salivating for.
I hate it when I focus on a hip-swinging pretty girl
And she only sees my white beard.
I hate all that… but.
If this is the choice I have to make
Between ending all that and going on laughing with my loved ones
And seeing the pink sun rising once again in the misty east
And knowing what will happen to our damn planet
It's not even a match!
